Martin Luther King, Jr., and Presidents' Day Safety
1.  As we begin what will be an extremely fast-paced year, we will celebrate two special holidays: Martin Luther King, Jr., Day and Presidents Day.  The great leaders being honored on these days shared many of the beliefs and values held by our current leaders who are leading us in the ongoing Global War on Terrorism.

2.  The next couple months will be very busy and hectic for USAREUR.  Operations in Afghanistan, the Balkans, Iraq, and elsewhere will continue to place significant demands on our Soldiers, civilians, and family members.  Our OPTEMPO will remain high.  While many in our units and workforce will enjoy these holidays, others will be on duty engaging in the many activities associated with the deployment and redeployment of USAREUR units, personnel, and equipment.

3.  Times like these can be dangerous.  I am especially concerned with the risks related to the massive movement of Soldiers and equipment.  Of particular concern are the dangers associated with rail and convoy operations.  Domestic violence, suicide, and off-duty vehicle accidents are of equal concern during this time.  Our USAREUR Winter Safety Campaign provides more information on these and other high-risk activities.

4.  We must be especially vigilant over the upcoming weeks to ensure the safety of our personnel and their family members.  Involvement by first-line leaders and rear-detachment commanders is key to preventing accidents.  Leaders must ensure Soldiers are trained to standard to execute their assigned tasks, that standards are enforced, and that Soldiers understand their responsibilities for taking care of themselves and their comrades in arms.  In addition, leaders must continue to emphasize safety measures and be aware of off-duty activities that put our Soldiers, civilians, and families at risk.

5.  I challenge leaders to pay close attention to their Soldiers during this critical time.  Take charge, be vigilant, and stay engaged.  Do everything you possibly can to help ensure "No Loss of Life" as we carry out Any Mission, Anywhere!

6.  Give this message the widest possible distribution, both in USAREUR and deployed units, by forwarding it electronically and posting it on unit bulletin boards.
